Optimism at the Santiago Chamber
Le 28 january 2010
The Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS) believes that Chile will make an economic recovery in 2010. It envisages growth of around 4.5%, after a crisis-struck 2009. The unemployment rate is expected to remain high, at approximately 8.7%, only one point lower than last year. Encouraged by government measures, job creation is set to accelerate. “We are counting on [...] over 130,000 new job positions,” asserts President of the CCS, Peter T. Hill. Chile registered a drop in its GDP of “only” 1.6% over one year in the third quarter of 2009. The country also looks forward to getting foreign trade back on its feet after “the total value of exports” fell by 22% (53 billion dollars in 2009, compared with 66 billion in 2008).
