British Chambers unsatisfied
Le 28 january 2010
British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), after recently celebrating their 150th birthday, are likewise wondering what to do about export. In mid-January, the Chief Economist at the national organisation expressed his concern. “Although these figures (published on 12 January by the British Office for National Statistics, ONS) show a welcome improvement in UK exports, it is clear that the much-needed rebalancing of the UK economy is not proceeding quickly enough,” considers David Kern. “Given the favourable global background for British exporters – with a competitive Sterling exchange rate [...] – our overall trading performance is still weak,” he regrets. The BCC is therefore demanding more support from the British government. According to the ONS, the UK’s trade deficit fell to 6.78 billion pounds (7.6 billion euros) in November 2009, compared with 7.01 billion pounds (7.95 billion euros) in October, whereas exports have increased by 0.2%.
