Euro zone: 1.22 million jobs lost

According to Eurostat figures, 1.22 million jobs were lost in the sixteen countries of the Euro Zone in the first quarter of the financial year, a 0.8% drop compared to the preceding three-month period. Across the 27 countries of the European Union, 1.916 million jobs were lost in the first quarter, a decrease of 0.8% as against the preceding period. Unemployment in the Euro Zone has now increased for the third consecutive quarter following a rise of 0.2% in the third quarter of 2008 and of 0.4% in the fourth quarter of the same year. In the EU as a whole, unemployment rose by 0.1% and 0.3% in the two quarters. In the first quarter, there were 223.8 million jobs in the EU, 146.2 million of them in the Euro Zone. In its latest economic forecasts, published in early May, the European Commission estimated that 8.5 million jobs would be lost in the EU in 2009-2010.
