Electric car: the queen and the lion
Le 2 september 2010
During her summer sejourn in Palma, Majorca, H.M. Queen Sofia of Spain got around in a car placed at her disposal by Peugeot Spain. She thus became the first driver of the all-new electric car from the lion-symbolled car manufacturer. A remarkable publicity coup for this model, given the Spanish Royal family's traditional attachment to the environmental cause. Riding on the strength of its leadership in the electric car sector – 106 sold between 1995 and 2003 –, Peugeot is crossing over to a new stage in its global strategy for the reduction of emissions, by launching in Europe, from the end of 2010 onwards, the Peugeot iOn, the first new-generation electric car. Noiseless, dynamic, easy to manoeuvre, high-performance thanks to its 47 kW (64 hp) electric motor, this compact urban vehicle, 3.48 metres long and seating four, offers simple and versatile driving, a high level of security, and features to increase comfort. Thanks to its efficient management of electric energy, the iOn has a comfortable autonomy of 150 km (European standard cycle). The lithium-ion battery can be completely recharged within 6 hours – or 80% in 30 minutes at specific recharging stands. Appreciated by professionals and private clients, the iOn will be available from the end of this year for a monthly rental rate lower than 500 €, including numerous maintenance and assistance services. The iOn, a 100% electric vehicle, is one of Peugeot’s responses to new challenges in urban mobility, an apparently pertinent solution as to date, fifteen letters of intention have already been signed with mobility operators, energy specialists and car-share companies in several countries.
