Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook
Obama thanks him!
Photo : D.R. At the age of 25, this former roommate of Mark Zuckerberg and co-founder of Facebook coordinated the online campaign of Barack Obama. Ever since, the American President’s use of online communities has inspired imitators from the world of politics all over the world. In April 2009, the American magazine Fast Company published a cover feature on Hughes as “The Kid Who Made Obama President; How Facebook Cofounder Chris Hughes Unleaded Barack’s Base and Changed Politics and Marketing Forever”. Indeed, the tool developed by Chris Hughes for Senator Barack Obama, My.BarackObama.com (MyBO), was a social network in itself that enabled funds to the sum of 30 million dollars (21 million euros) to be raised, some 200,000 events to be managed, and Democrat supporters to rally into tens of thousands of groups. According to Joe Rospars, from Obama’s campaign office, “the community built up around Chris’ platform provided us with indispensable aid”.There is no denying Chris Hughes’ huge role in the election of the first Afro-American President. Even if the young prodigy had to leave Facebook at the start of 2007 to devote himself to helping the President get elected, he lost nothing from making the move. The better the election surveys and Barack Obama’s victories at the primaries, the more Chris Hughes’ financial resources increased drastically. Today, with the elections far behind, MyBO has been transformed into “Organizing for America”, a project taken over by the Democrat Party. As for Chris, he says that he is ready for new challenges… on condition that he is inspired, he says.
