“If you iron your clothes with a steam iron before leaving on a trip, you must air them for least 24 hours, otherwise humidity fills every crease,” explains fashion creator Tilmann Grawe. Of course, synthetic materials will spare us the chore of ironing,
but they are neither fashionable nor refreshing, except for the famous Japanese polyester by Issey Miyake.
This summer, we appreciate cotton, linen, silk, in short, all natural, light, fresh fabrics. Alas, cotton and linen have a tendency to crease.
“You can avoid the worst by wrapping each article in a plastic cover,” advises Tilmann Grawe. Automatically,
a cushion of air will form and protect T-shirts and evening dresses. And let’s stay cool, linen lovers can also adopt the wrinkled look. It’s not a problem.
At IKKS, women can find cotton, silk and viscose dresses that can be stored in
sachets as small as envelopes. For fashionable women, the laidback brand offers
an entire range of crumpled-look shirts, tunics and dresses. Others who prefer an impeccable look, will find what they want from the queen of minimalism, the German Jil Sander. Pretty white shirts in stretch cotton – wrinkle-free thanks to a touch of polyamide and spandex – are perfect for both hiking and town excursions (340 euros). Silk crepe, both light and smooth, remains the fabric most adapted to summer travels.
“In worst case scenarios, it can be hung up in the bathroom after a shower. The steam is enough to smooth it out,” reassures Tilmann Grawe. At Dior, you can find a silk crepe top, cut like a jacket, for 700 euros. Kenzo, the king of colours, spoils us with ultra-light creased skirts in hues of blue (1,300 euros), that are a perfect match for bronzed complexions. Soft, light and gay, Kenzo’s beach towels for two are a roaring success, and accessibly priced to boot, at 110 euros.
As each summer, Jean Paul Gaultier is sheathing his fashionistas in clingy beach dresses. For exclusive destinations, such as Saint-Tropez or Miami Beach, the mustard-colour silk crepe suit is the thing to wear (1,340 euros). Finally, let’s not forget that wool is a refreshing companion for forays into the desert. And what’s more, its elastic qualities help it to always preserve its shape. In the mountains and in the evenings, the season’s must is the purple silk cashmere cardigan (Jil Sander) or a slightly transparent top. Dior offers it in black and white (470 euros). And last tip: take advantage of the summer sales!
